According to a recent interview with a former Aristocrat designer, the team was tasked with creating a game that would appeal to a broader audience and compete with more established brands.
"We wanted to create something that would stand out from the crowd," recalled the designer, who wishes to remain anonymous. "We looked at different concepts and ideas, but nothing seemed quite right until we stumbled upon the idea of a cute, cartoon ducky."
Meet the Creative Team
The initial design concept for Lucky Ducky was created by a team of talented artists and designers within Aristocrat’s Melbourne studio. The primary designer responsible for bringing Lucky Ducky to life was Australian artist, Michael Longley.
"I remember the first time I saw the character designs," said Longley in an interview with us. "The art director at the time, [Name Withheld], would show me these rough sketches of a ducky character that made you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It had this certain charm to it."
Longley’s unique style blended traditional drawing techniques with modern computer-aided design tools, creating an instantly recognizable character. As for the name "Lucky Ducky," it was reportedly chosen during brainstorming sessions by the team.
"We didn’t want something too on-the-nose like ‘Lucky Duck,’ so we went with ‘Lucky Ducky’ as a way to give it a bit of whimsy and friendliness," explained Longley.
